Laura Garcia: "I love my profession because it gives me the freedom to create new things"

¿And what makes Snipes so special?

My personal design! (Laughs) ... the Snipe is a simple, functional shoe made of valuable materials. We are sustainable and don’t live from one season to the next. Our Snipes are worth looking at and wearing for a really long time – and that’s our incentive.

¿How did you get to design shoes?

I received an enquiry through my professor at university. Ernesto Segarra was looking for an industrial designer to create shoes at the time. That was a new area for me, and I first had to learn what was important for shoe design.

¿Where do you get your inspiration from?

My office is on the thirteenth floor and has a wonderful view over Valencia and the sea. It’s this expanse that promotes my creativity. But most of my inspiration still comes from people in the street and from talks with my colleagues and friends.

¿What makes a designer’s profession so unique?

I love my profession because it gives me the freedom to create new things – and to develop shapes that may be unusual and new. If I’m lucky I might come across some of my ideas again in the street.

¿How do you set about designing a shoe?

I develop its shape on the computer. Then something we call a model last (a plastic copy of the shoe last) helps me see the effect the shoe can have in reality. I then work out the details of the shape on this model, along with any seams and nuances of colour. The prototype comes out of that.
